ABOUT ME

Teaching voice and piano is a way to share my greatest love with everyone from young beginning students to advanced adults and anyone in-between.  I love watching budding pianists move their fingers freely and confidently over a keyboard, and seeing that look of excitement on a singer's face when an unexpected sound pours out of them.

I am a classically trained singer with a doctorate in music from the University of Michigan with a concentration in voice.  I have been teaching for over 20 year, and have had many students go on to become professional musicians and teachers themselves, and others who just take lessons for fun.  Many students participate in theater in their communities and schools, or sing in church, school or local choirs.

As a teacher, I celebrate all of my students as individuals with diverse gifts and experiences. In my studio, I provide sanctuary for all persons, no matter their race, religion, sexual or gender identity, ability or age. It is never my intent to question, alter or erase the individuality of any of my students, but rather to celebrate them and give them tools to share their gifts with the world.

I am an active member of National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), and I am located in Royal Oak, MI.

LESSON INFORMATION

My studio is a safe space to explore and play.  I work with each student as an individual, and shape lessons around what they want to achieve, and what they have to offer.  Every student has a world of opportunity ahead of them, and my goal is to safely lead them through a part of that experience.  Studio policies are available in the links.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

Lucy Reinke, former student

Rachel is the greatest voice teacher I ever could have imagined having. She helped me grow both technically and artistically, with endless support and compassion. We spent so much time not only on how to sing in a healthy way, but also on how to tell a story through that singing. Without her guidance, I would not be where I am now, and I am so thankful for her.

Tiara Westley-Phillips, graduate of Saginaw Valley State University in Music

Dr. Andrews is not only a great teacher and mentor, but a wonderful friend. She exudes the kind of compassion that you read about in books, but don’t expect to see in real life, and laughs with her whole heart!

I’ve disliked my voice for so long, because I was unable to sound the way people wanted me too. She never told me I should sound like *insert random black female artist name*, she never put me in a box and asked me to only be great in that capacity. Dr. Andrews stepped aside (gently guiding me of course), and had me step aside to be great in whatever capacity and form my voice will be. I would not have the self esteem to keep moving forward without the support she has shown me the past two years as her student.  If you want to not only learn, but also grow as person, performer, etc, you could not make a better choice.

Drew Korpal, graduate of Saginaw Valley State University in Theater

As a person utterly new to using my voice for singing, I was a touch terrified over the prospect. I didn't know what to expect... from the environment, from her, or from myself.

But she made me feel very welcome and encouraged. Then she challenged me, in a firm but caring way, to improve on every level. She provides a safe, supportive, creative, and fun space to explore our instruments.

I have a deep fondness and respect for Rachel, and happily recommend her to anyone, on any level, who wants to learn about their voice or improve upon an already experienced instrument.  In the world of voice, you never stop needing a good voice coach!

Carolyn DePottey,

My granddaughter has been taking Piano lessons with Rachel for over a year. She loves her lessons and really enjoys learning new songs. Rachel not only teaches how to play the correct notes, she also makes sure the student understands the musical concepts behind the notes. She is currently taking her lesson via Zoom and Rachel keeps her involved and excited to learn more each week. I highly recommend her for anyone of any age wanting piano lessons. If you have a child interested in piano, you will love how Rachel Andrews teaches it.

The Edberg Family

Ms. Rachel is a wonderful teacher. Extremely patient with and supportive of beginners, challenges students to not only improve their play but to also grow in their understanding of music theory, and encourages students to explore their musical tastes as well. I would highly recommend Ms. Rachel to anyone who wants to learn to play the piano..

Megan Hanks,
former voice student

Rachel Andrews knows her stuff! She is amazing at bringing out the talent and authenticity in voices. She teaches quality techniques that protect singers and voices while still training them to blossom into their full potential. In addition to teaching fantastic musical skills, she also is an expert at helping students feel confident in their art and in themselves. I have studied with Rachel Andrews for five years (I think?), and every lesson with her was truly the highlight of my week.

Daniel Wilson, singer-songwriter

"Rachel was one of my most important, influential roads towards finding myself musically.  I’ve never been one for music theory but each day she brought her expertise and brilliance to my music experience – encouraging me to reach my goals.  She’s a beautiful soul, which I feel should be a requirement for any music teacher, and I cannot recommend anyone better."

Jaclene Wilk, actor

I met Rachel at the right timing in my life. I was frustrated with feeling the pressure of choosing a realistic career over an “unrealistic” musical theater dream. Rachel was part of the team at Washtenaw Community College who gave me the confidence and guidance to go after the dream. I now live in NYC acting, and Rachel is a huge part of that. She helped me find my voice again (literally), and I will be forever thankful.

Ellie Carter, elementary
music teacher

Working with Rachel has been one the most rewarding and beneficial endeavors of my vocal training. Her passion for all forms of music allows her to make connections that not all musicians are capable of. She always has her students’ best interest at heart and works with great care to see that they achieve their goals. I highly recommend working with Rachel for any singer who wants to improve their singing technique and learn from a very gifted teacher.
